At your request, we collect yard waste. Yard waste must be placed at the curb or alley on your regular trash service day. Please have your yard waste ready for pickup by 6 a.m. in St. Paul, 7 a.m. in other cities, on the day of your regular trash collection.

On-Call Yard Waste Plan
Call Aspen by noon the day before your regular service day (by noon Friday if your pickup day is Monday) to schedule pickup of your bagged or bundled yard waste along with your regular trash collection. Yard waste will not be picked up without prior authorization. A service charge will be billed for each bag or bundle picked up.

Premium Yard Waste Plan
For a non-refundable annual fee, we will pick up unlimited bagged or bundled yard waste each week along with your regular trash collection during the yard waste season. You may sign up for the premium yard waste plan at any time during the yard waste season. If you cancel your Aspen trash service, your yard waste plan is also cancelled. Yard waste plan annual fees are non-refundable.

Yard waste season normally runs from April to November, weather permitting. Specific dates change each year.

Compostable bags required for yard waste pickup in 2010

Effective January 1, 2010, customers who bag their yard waste must use compostable bags. A new law forbids the use of conventional plastic bags for yard trimmings collected in the Twin Cities area. Approved bags must be either paper or biodegradable, compostable plastic bags that meet ASTM D6400 specifications.

The new law affects residents in the counties of Anoka, Carver, Hennepin (excluding the City of Minneapolis), Ramsey, Scott, and Washington.

In 2010, your yard waste must be bagged in a compostable bag, or Aspen will not be allowed to pick it up..

The new compostable bags are clear, green tinted, or white. They are made from biodegradable plastic that will break down in a composting site (regular plastic yard bags do not). The bags can be purchased at home improvement, grocery and retail stores. Look for bags that meet the ASTM Standard Specification for Compostable Plastics (D6400).

What’s considered yard waste?

This is yard waste

  • Bagged leaves
  • Bagged grass clippings
  • Bagged garden waste (Limit 35 lbs. per bag)
  • Brush and twigs (limbs no more than 3 in. in diameter and no more than 4 ft. long tied in bundles no more than 2 ft. in diameter.)

This is not yard waste

  • Dirt, sod, hay, straw
  • Tree stumps and Large branches
  • Animal feces
  • Dead animals
  • Rocks, concrete, asphalt

Other Yard Waste Options

Mulch leaves and grass clippings, and leave them on your lawn. You'll need less fertilizer, too.

Compost your garden, yard, and food waste. Tips and detailed instructions for getting started are available at Minnesota Pollution Control website, University of Minnesota Extension Service website, or call 612-624-4771.
